Susse Sewing Box Bird Family

I managed to do a quick sowing project this week. I love sowing at night it is a great wind down to the day after being a mom duty all day. I had been reading Living Creatively and thought I would check out their free projects and patterns. Which you can find here http://www.livingcreatively.com.au/CreateNow.aspx?PageID=21 I choose to make the fabric bird. http://www.livingcreatively.com.au/CreateNow.aspx?PageID=21&CategoryID=40 I downloaded the pattern and easy sowing instructions. I decided to modify the pattern and make a mommy and daddy bird so I created this little family of birds using my Publisher textile fabric. I going to give them to Felix I have them in our bedroom but he so fascinated by them. I keeping them for my self for a little longer. I suspect he just wants to chew them as his first tooth is arriving everything is being chewed at the moment. Here they are sorry a bad photo will post a better one later Felix needed my urgent attention. Anyway check out the other projects if you fancy a go at being creative this weekend. http://www.livingcreatively.com.au/CreateNow.aspx?PageID=21&CategoryID=40

Love Books Alabama Stitch Book

Hooray my new book Alabama Stitch Book by Natalie Chanin with Stacie Stukin arrived this week. A lovely little gem. I bought my copy from www.fishpond.com.au it did take ages to arrive but I did I get free delivery. You can buy it direct from the Alabamachanin website or amazon. I suppose it was a slow life moment. It was worth waiting for. One of the reasons I heard about this book was researching Slow Life and Slow Design.
In this book their definition is "Slow design "means embracing the long term view over the short term gain by using age old techniques to create products that celebrate strong design principles for modern living.
The book has many lovely projects to do but also interwoven is the history if the American Cotton industry and age old sowing techniques and even cooking recipes. I love the story if how flower sacks where recycled to make clothing quilts and toys. Even thread was unravelled fabric from tobacco pouches to make thread nothing was wasted in the old days. Times where tight but people still created beautiful objects recycling what resources they had.
The main fabric for all these projects are recycled t shirts but I guess you could use other materials.
The book was originally a drafted blue print or business manual for the Alabama Project but I think it isa lovely business model.
I haven't tried any projects but I am eyeing up Jarrod's computer freebie T shirts to chop up....
when I do I will feature in Susse Sewing box on my Flickr page. mm now where are those scissors
hee hee..

Mexicana Night

Last week we had a Mexicana night in honor of Jarrod's birthday just a small dinner party but we had a great time . Very baby friendly night easy to prepare the food quickly. Lots of Salad ,tortilla chips, Burritos, Margaretta's, Mexican beer and everyone was happy. I was going to make a Mexican sombrero hat Birthday cake but I decided I was being a bit over ambitious and also very time poor.
To get the Mexican feeling going you need some music so we bough this CD quite mix of different styles so something for everyone.
Music Traveller Mexico National Geographic by Sony Music . This great little CD with an interactive CD ROM all about Mexico the festivals local art etc. I tried to find an on line source for this but only cam up with an e-bay not even amazon sold it. We got our form a regular brick and mortar store Myers department store in Sydney.
We didn't buy any decorations but we had some around the house to add a bit of Mexican feeling with these great tissue paper chains we bought in China town. Lots of Jelly beans and plastic cowboys and some red roses add to the atmosphere. I did do some research and found an online store in Australia. http://www.thepartypeople.com.au/products/?c=43 They have some great party things.

We bought a blender and made some margaritas very easy to do some Tequila and a Margaretta mix and a bag of ice. some fancy cocktail accessories umbrellas etc.

Here is a nice recipe I found for Margaritas...

Susse Saturday Shop part 2

Actually this is really a Sunday shop recommendation as there is only one day left of the Young Blood market and Sydney design Boom market. It is Sydney Design festival time this week.
I had a wonderful day today browsing all the lovely products for sale and the market reminded me of days of browsing Brick lane markets on a Sunday minus the DJ spinning their discs while you shopped.
So many things I loved but I did purchase a beautiful salt and pepper set a bird and cloud from Korean designer
Daniel Jo sooo cute visit his website and see his beautiful work not so surprised he has nearly sold out but he said he has plans to sell online.

Susse Saturday Shop

Some treasure from Publisher Textiles
If you happen to be having a Saturday browse around Liechhardt in Sydney or downing a Saturday cappuccino with a friend on Norton Street. Not so far away is a little gem tucked away in the streets of Leichhardt. I was out having a pram wander with Felix when I came across this lovely sign in the street and went to investigate the studio opening. Check out Publisher textiles. You can catch a glimps of their studio and have a lovely store decked out with beautiful hand printed wallpapers fabric and lovely cushions and lampshades. If you can't decided they have bundles of samplers of fabric to choose from. Other things to suit all pockets from note books and t-shirts. It is very kiddy friendly with an old typewriter for kids to play on while you choose something nice for your home. Open every saturday. Checkout their website for more info... Publisher textiles
